2023 University of Edinburgh Andrea Levy Scholarship for International Students

The University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom is pleased to offer the Andrea Levy Scholarship for international students, specifically for Black African and Caribbean heritage applicants from socio-economically challenged backgrounds. The scholarship is named after Andrea Levy, a multi-award winning novelist born in London to Jamaican parents who had personal and family links to Edinburgh and Scotland.

The scholarship is designed to fully cover tuition fees and provide a stipend of £5,000 per annum to cover living expenses throughout the undergraduate degree. The scholarship is open to all African and Caribbean countries, and the deadline for application is April 14, 2023.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must belong to one of the following categories of ethnicity: Black Caribbean; Black African; Black Other; Mixed – White/Black Caribbean; Mixed – White /Black African; or Other mixed background that includes Caribbean heritage. They must also start a first undergraduate full-time degree program at the University of Edinburgh in the 2023-24 academic year, be assessed for fee status as a 'home' student, and have a household income below £34,000 per annum.

The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees, which is typically £9,250 per annum for most 'rest of UK' students. It also provides a stipend of £5,000 per annum to cover living expenses. The scholarship is tenable for the duration of the undergraduate program, which is typically four years but can be longer. The award does not affect eligibility for an Access Edinburgh Scholarship (£1,000 – £5,000 per annum) and both awards can be held at the same time. The total available towards living expenses is up to £10,000 for every year of the course.

Applications for the scholarship will be assessed based on household income, academic achievements, personal achievements, and how the scholarship would benefit the applicant's studies and help them achieve their academic goals. The application statement must be between 600 and 900 words and should explain the applicant's proudest achievements, how the scholarship would be beneficial, and how their education would benefit their community and/or society. Other personal or academic circumstances that may have influenced or impacted the applicant's education will also be considered.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview to discuss their aspirations and answer any questions they have.

Overall, the Andrea Levy Scholarship is an excellent opportunity for eligible African and Caribbean students to study at the University of Edinburgh without the burden of tuition fees and with extra financial support to cover living expenses.
